Is Kratom Safe? What Testing Can and Cannot Tell You

The question splits in two. One half has no settled answer — the other is answerable, and it comes down to what a vendor tests for and whether they show you.

"Is kratom safe?" is really two questions wearing one coat, and they have very different answers.

The first is pharmacological: what does this plant do in the body, at what dose, over what period? That question does not have a settled answer, and anyone telling you otherwise — in either direction — is going beyond the evidence.

The second is about the product in front of you: is this particular bag what the label says, and is it free of things that should not be in it? That question is answerable. It has documented failure cases, established test methods, an independently audited standard, and a clear way to check before you buy.

This page is about the second question, because it is the one you can do something about.

The gap that testing exists to close

Kratom is sold in the US with no mandatory federal purity standard. It is a botanical grown and harvested in Southeast Asia, processed through several hands, and imported — the same supply chain shape as any imported herb, but without the testing regime a regulated category would carry.

What that gap looks like in practice was documented in April 2019, when the FDA tested 30 kratom products and found lead and nickel at concentrations above what is considered safe for oral daily intake. The concern was cumulative rather than acute: at heavy, long-term use patterns, exposure could reach levels associated with heavy-metal toxicity.

That is not a finding about kratom the plant. It is a finding about unregulated manufacturing — and manufacturing problems are exactly the kind that testing and auditing are designed to catch. Which is what makes the next part the useful part of this page.

Which is why testing is the part you can verify

There is no federal purity standard for kratom. In its absence, the meaningful signal is whether a vendor tests each batch through an independent lab and will show you the result for the batch you are holding.

A complete panel covers three separate things, and they are not interchangeable:

A vendor testing only for alkaloids is measuring potency, not safety. A vendor saying "lab tested" without specifying which of the three is telling you very little. The industry built its own standard

With no federal standard to meet, the trade association wrote one. The American Kratom Association's GMP Standards Program, launched in 2019, is the closest thing this market has to enforced quality control — and it is more demanding than the phrase "GMP compliant" on a product page suggests.

What qualification actually requires:

  • An on-site facility audit by an independent, qualified auditing firm — conducted within 90 days of enrolling, not self-assessed.
  • Annual re-audit. Qualification is not a one-time badge; vendors must pass an independent audit every year and pay a recertification fee to stay listed.
  • Standards modeled on 21 CFR 111, the FDA's current Good Manufacturing Practice regulation for dietary supplements. The program borrows the federal rulebook that would apply if kratom were regulated as a supplement.
  • Scope beyond testing — manufacturing, processing, packaging, storage, distribution, and labeling are all in scope, not just the lab panel.

The practical upshot: a qualified vendor has let an outside auditor walk their facility and check their records against a federal-grade standard, and has done it again every year since. That is a materially different claim from "we send samples to a lab."

It is voluntary, which is the honest limit — no vendor is compelled to participate, and plenty of perfectly good sellers are not enrolled. But presence on the list is real, independently verified evidence rather than a self-claim, and anyone can check it: the AKA publishes the qualified-vendor list publicly.

All three vendors we track appear on it. That is not a coincidence — it is most of why they are the three we track.

What our three vendors actually do

We track three vendors, and all three publish testing. Where they differ is in how much they will show you, and one of them is markedly more specific than the rest.

Kraken Kratom — the most specific published panel

Start here if the lab work is what you care about. Kraken publishes more detail about its testing than either of the others, and does it by naming the actual analytical methods rather than asserting that testing happens.

Kraken tests for heavy metals — arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury — under AOAC 2013.06, and for microbial safety under a named set: aerobic plate count (AOAC 990.12), yeast and mould (AOAC 997.02), coliforms and E. coli (AOAC 991.4), and Salmonella (AOAC-RI 050701). Products are composite-tested to AHPA standards, and it publishes an average alkaloid content of greater than 1.5% mitragynine.

Kraken was also the first vendor in the industry to receive AKA GMP qualification when that program launched in 2019, and has held it every year since. That credential is worth unpacking, because it is the strongest single signal available in this market.

Kats Botanicals — batch-level lookup

Kats runs the most useful verification feature of the three: a batch lookup. Its packaging carries a QR code and batch number, and entering that number on its COA page returns the lab results for the specific lot in your hand.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. Most vendors publish a certificate; being able to match the document to your own bag is the difference between a marketing claim and evidence. Its published process describes per-batch testing for microbes and heavy metals, with mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine concentrations determined at the same step.

Kats is also AKA GMP qualified, so the batch documentation sits on top of the same annually audited manufacturing standard described above.

Kona Kratom — tested, and the best value

Kona publishes third-party lab testing, and its stated approach goes past raw potency: it describes looking at the ratios between alkaloids and at batch-to-batch consistency, on the reasoning that a vendor whose product swings between orders is a vendor whose process is not controlled. Orders are backed by a money-back guarantee.

Kona is AKA GMP qualified as well, which is the part most price-led comparisons miss: it is consistently the cheapest per gram of the three, as we set out in cheapest kratom, while still carrying the same annually audited credential as the premium options. Cheapest and audited are not usually the same vendor.

What testing does not tell you

This is the part that would be dishonest to leave out, and it is the boundary of everything above.

A clean COA tells you what is not in the bag. It does not tell you that what is in the bag is safe for you. Those are different claims, and the second one is not established.

Specifically, lab testing says nothing about:

  • Dependence and tolerance. Vendors' own labels state kratom may be habit-forming and is not recommended for long-term use — Kraken prints exactly that on its product pages. A heavy-metals panel has no bearing on it.
  • Drug interactions. If you take prescription medication, this is a question for a doctor or pharmacist, and no certificate addresses it.
  • Individual response. Effects vary between people in ways no batch test predicts.
  • Long-term use. There is no body of long-term safety data to point to, clean product or not.
  • Approval status. Kratom is not FDA-approved for any use, and a tested product is still not an approved one.

So the accurate framing is narrow: testing reduces contamination risk, which is the risk with the clearest documented harm record. It does not make kratom safe, and we are not saying it does. Anyone selling you the idea that a lab certificate settles the safety question is overselling their own paperwork.

How to check before you buy

Four questions, and a vendor that cannot answer them has answered them:

  1. Can I see the COA for the batch I am buying? Not a sample certificate — the one matching your lot number.
  2. What was tested for? Heavy metals and microbials and alkaloids, or only one of the three?
  3. Who ran it? An independent accredited lab, or the vendor's own bench?
  4. When? A certificate from two years ago describes a batch you are not buying.

  • "Is kratom safe" splits in two. The pharmacological half has no settled answer. The product half does.
  • There is no mandatory federal purity standard, and the FDA found lead and nickel above safe limits in 30 tested products in 2019. That is a manufacturing problem, and testing is what catches it.
