
The difference is concentration, and it is larger than most labels suggest. Plain leaf powder is the whole dried leaf, milled — typically around 1–2% mitragynine by weight. An extract has had those alkaloids pulled out with a solvent and concentrated, landing anywhere from roughly 5% to 45% mitragynine depending on the product. Same plant, same alkaloids, wildly different amount per gram.
That single fact drives everything else worth knowing: why extract labels use multipliers like "10x," why those multipliers are close to meaningless, why extracts cost several times more per gram while still being cheaper per unit of alkaloid, and why the 2026 federal rulemaking landed on concentrates rather than on leaf. If you are deciding between the two formats, the useful question is not "which is stronger" — extracts obviously are — but "do I know what is in this one?"

What an extract actually is
Leaf powder involves no chemistry. Leaves are dried, milled, and bagged. Whatever the plant produced is what ends up in the bag, which is why alkaloid content swings by harvest and why per-batch testing is the only way to know what a given bag holds.
An extract adds a processing step. Milled leaf is soaked in a solvent that dissolves the alkaloids, the plant material is filtered off, and the solvent is evaporated down. The solvents are ordinary ones: hot water, acidified water — citric acid is typical, since mitragynine dissolves more readily at low pH — and food-grade ethanol. What comes out is a resin, powder, or liquid holding most of the leaf's alkaloids in a fraction of the original mass.

Enhanced leaf is the middle category and the one most often misread. Products like Ultra Enhanced Indo are leaf powder that has been dosed with extract — stronger than plain leaf, not as concentrated as a straight extract, and priced between the two.
Why "10x" on the label tells you almost nothing
This is the part that costs people money. A "10x" label does not mean ten times the potency. It refers to the starting-material ratio — roughly, ten grams of leaf went in and one gram came out. It describes the reduction, not the result.
Extraction efficiency varies enormously between producers, so the ratio and the potency come apart completely. A poorly executed 10x can land near 3% mitragynine. A well-made 5x can exceed 20%. The bigger number on the front of the box loses to the smaller one routinely.
The only figure that means anything is the tested mitragynine percentage, or the milligrams per serving. A vendor that publishes "45mg mitragynine per 5mL shot" has told you something checkable. A vendor that publishes "50x" has told you nothing you can act on. If a product's marketing leans on the multiplier and never names a percentage, that is the answer to the question you were asking.
Full spectrum vs isolate
The second label distinction is what got kept during extraction.
Full spectrum extracts aim to carry over the leaf's whole alkaloid profile — mitragynine plus speciociliatine, paynantheine, and the dozens of minor alkaloids present in the plant. Isolates concentrate one alkaloid, usually mitragynine, and leave the rest behind.
This distinction is not marketing fluff, and the DEA's own filing on 7-OH leaned on it. The agency's argument was that alkaloids in whole leaf compete with each other in a way that an isolated, concentrated single alkaloid does not — which is exactly why federal action separated concentrates from leaf. The 2026 rule change hit concentrates, not leaf
If you are researching extracts in 2026, this is the context you need.
On July 6, 2026 the DEA published a notice of intent to temporarily place 7-hydroxymitragynine above a specified threshold into Schedule I. The threshold is 0.05% 7-OH by dry weight, and for processed forms — extracts, concentrates, edibles, pressed tablets — it is 0.05% or 1 milligram of 7-OH per article, whichever applies. A separate order taking effect August 26, 2026 scheduled three related synthetics outright: mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, and MGM-16.
Ordinary leaf powder and mitragynine itself are not named in either action. Natural leaf carries 7-OH only in trace amounts, well under the line. The exposure sits with the concentrated end of the market — and a product's own concentration is what determines which side of that threshold it falls on, which is another argument for buying from vendors who publish full alkaloid panels rather than a multiplier.

Cost, and why powder stays the default
Per gram, extracts are far more expensive. At Kraken Kratom, powders start around $8–13 while extracts run roughly $15–50 — Ultra Enhanced Indo starts near $50 for five grams. Per milligram of alkaloid, the gap narrows sharply, since you are buying many times the concentration.
But cost is not why plain powder remains the volume category. Three practical reasons come up repeatedly:

- Label reliability. Powder potency is bounded by botany. Extract potency is bounded only by the manufacturer's process and honesty, and independent testing has repeatedly found extract labels that do not match contents.
- Community convention. In vendor guidance and user discussion alike, extracts are consistently framed as occasional or situational products rather than everyday ones, while leaf powder is the daily default.
The through-line is that concentration removes the plant's own margin for error. That is the trade you are making, in both directions.
What to check before buying either format
The checklist is the same as for any kratom purchase, with one addition:
